ABC3D’s PEI 9085/CNT Conductive Filament is made with aerospace-grade ULTEM™ 9085 resin and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs). As a result, it provides a powerful mix of static protection, flame resistance (UL 94 V-0), and strength. ULTEM™ 9085 is a special plastic known for its high strength-to-weight ratio and great heat and chemical resistance. Additionally, adding CNTs ensures uniform conductivity. This makes the filament ideal for ESD-safe parts in aerospace, defense, and electronics manufacturing.

Recent studies on CNT-reinforced PEI have shown that CNT/PEI filaments produced via melt processing deliver reliable electrical conductivity while preserving PEI’s high strength and thermal stability, validating PEI-CNT as an excellent base for aerospace-grade ESD-safe parts (Yıldız et al., 2022).

PEI 9085/CNT Grades and Applications

The Electrically Conductive PEI 9085 Filament is available in three grades:

  1. Antistatic – with a volume resistivity of 10E8 to 10E10 ohm cm.
  2. Electrostatic Discharge Grade (ESD) – featuring a volume resistivity of 10E4 to 10E6 ohm cm.
  3. Conductive EMI/RFI Shielding – possessing a volume resistivity of 10E0 to 10E2 ohm cm.

This material is ideal for making circuits, sensors, and electromagnetic shielding. Therefore, it has many uses for various projects. Whether you’re a hobbyist or a professional engineer, this filament is an excellent choice. For example, it’s compatible with most high-temperature 3D printers, making it useful for a wide audience.

Printed parts also feature a distinct matte finish with a lightly textured surface, which improves both their look and performance. Finally, for even better precision, you can apply finishing techniques like sanding or polishing while keeping the electrical conductivity.

PEI 9085/CNT Conductive Filament: FAQs

1. Is this filament abrasive?

Yes. This is an extremely abrasive, high-performance composite. Consequently, a standard brass nozzle will be destroyed very quickly. A hardened steel, ruby-tipped, or all-metal nozzle is absolutely required.

2. How difficult is this PEI 9085/CNT filament to print?

This is an expert-level material. It requires an industrial, high-temperature printer capable of reaching a 360-390°C nozzle temperature, a 140°C+ bed, and an actively heated chamber (70°C+). This filament cannot be printed on a standard desktop printer.

3. Why use PEI 9085 over PC/CNT or PPS/CNT?

The primary reason is certification. PEI 9085 (ULTEM™) is one of the few 3D printing plastics with a **UL 94 V-0 flame rating** and is certified for aerospace applications. Therefore, you choose it when your parts must meet strict flame, smoke, and toxicity (FST) regulations for aerospace, defense, or transportation.

4. Do I absolutely need to dry this filament?

Yes, without exception. All high-performance filaments are extremely hygroscopic. You must dry this filament at 120°C for at least 4 hours immediately before printing. Failure to do so will result in failed prints and poor mechanical properties.
