Completion of NGen Project

ABC3D Announces Completion of NGen supported Project: 9705 Consortium to Establish Canada’s Rural Proofing Commercial-Scale Biorefinery

Trail, BC – Advanced BioCarbon 3D Ltd (ABC), in collaboration with the University of British Columbia (UBC), project partners KF Hemp Corp and Virtual Layer Inc., is proud to announce the formation of a consortium dedicated to creating Canada’s Rural Proofing commercial-scale biorefinery. This groundbreaking initiative aims to revolutionize the production of sustainable high-performance bioplastics and advanced materials, leveraging waste hemp stalk supplied by KF Hemp’s extensive farmland spanning 50,000 acres.

The consortium’s ultimate goal is to establish a state-of-the-art biorefinery that will produce 40,000 metric tonnes annually of sustainable bioplastics and advanced materials. By utilizing the abundant hemp stalks provided by KF Hemp Corp, the project will contribute significantly to reducing waste and advancing Canada’s bioeconomy.

The project has already supported the expansion and engineering of ABC’s test and development centre, strategically located in Trail, BC. These enhancements are crucial for progressively scaling the biorefinery process, design, build, and operation to achieve commercial-scale production in the 300-ton-per-day (tpd) range of biomass. The investment in this facility strengthens ABC’s commitment to advancing sustainable manufacturing processes and fostering innovation in the region.

ABC and its consortium partners are devoted to driving economic growth and sustainability by launching various scales of next-generation biorefineries across rural communities in Canada. These biorefineries will unlock the potential of renewable resources, promote local development, and address pressing environmental challenges.

“We are very grateful for the financial support received from Next Generation Manufacturing (NGen) and thank our esteemed partners in this project” said Darrel Fry, CEO at ABC. “This ambitious project represents a significant milestone in our mission to deliver sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics and materials. By harnessing the potential of hemp stalks, we aim to demonstrate the viability and scalability of our innovative biorefinery technology, paving the way for a greener and more circular future.”

Through this collaboration, ABC and its consortium partners are poised to make a substantial impact on Canada’s bioeconomy, driving the development of sustainable materials while fostering job creation and regional prosperity.
